Crimestoppers was introduced in the United Kingdom in 1998 from it’s origins in Mexico and Northern America. The Community Action
Trust (CAT) supported the introduction of
Crimestoppers and it established an initial scheme in the London area, then developing national coverage of the United Kingdom with 31 local Boards. The national Chairperson of the trustees is Lord Ashcroft who is supported by several experienced business professionals. Crimestoppers Trust is a registered charity and is not, as many people believe, part of the UK police service or wholly funded by the Home Office. The branding of the organisation is associated with the Free phone number 0800 555 111 and the Crimestoppers profile is associated with reliability, honesty and integrity. From a humble beginning Crimestoppers is a concept that has spread throughout the USA,Canada and Australia as well as Great Britain and Ireland.
The principal aim of Crimestoppers is widely understood as to reduce crime and the fear of crime through offering rewards for information on criminality. However, the wider activities of Crimestoppers receive little attention and are focused on benefiting local communities . We have recently held a schools female football competition in Salisbury and this has been followed up by a number of visits to local schools to relay the basic Crimestoppers message along with drug and alcohol education. A strong emphasis is placed on children/youth education and local community reassurance projects. This is an expansive product that is self funded by Wiltshire Crimestoppers through fund raisers, corporate sponsorship or our flagship annual event, the Wiltshire Crimestoppers Family Funday.
Wiltshire Crimestoppers has an enviable record of achievement of modern, dynamic partnership. We are currently seeking pre-determined funding for planned events across the County to achieve our aims and aspirations. For further information on how you can support these events and our local communities through charitable work please contact Sue Fobbester – Vice Chair on 01373 453 450 sfobbester_1@blueyonder.co.uk.
All of Wiltshire Crimestoppers activities take part within the County of Wiltshire and for the direct benefit of Wiltshire Communities.
